Borussia Dortmund were first to confirm their place in the final with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain. While Real Madrid had to withstand a challenge from Manchester City to make it through to the showdown.
The match kicked off with Real looking the more dangerous side, and they took the lead in the 15th minute when Varane poked home from close range. The goal seemed to give Real confidence, and they continued to press forward. Ronaldo had a number of chances to extend their lead, but he was unable to find the net. However, Real did eventually get their second goal in the 73rd minute when Ronaldo converted a penalty. The goal effectively ended the match as a contest, and Real were able to see out the remaining minutes to secure their victory.
Zinedine Zidane, Real's coach, said after the match that he was "delighted" with his team's performance. "We played a great game and we deserved to win," he said. "We were very compact and we didn't give our opponents any chances.""This is a great victory for us," said Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos. "We worked hard all season and we deserve this. We are very happy to have won this title and we are going to enjoy it." The win gives Real their second Champions League title in three years, and their 12th overall. They are now the most successful club ever in the history of the competition.
